The Godfather

So here we go, reviewing a movie widely known as being perfect. I'm going to start off this review by saying I don't think any movie can be perfect, and that this movie did not hit close to what I would consider a perfect movie. Am I saying I thought it was a bad movie? No, but at the same time it's not my favorite movie of all time all of a sudden.

To pick apart this movie in its entirety would take longer than the movie itself, which is long of course. The movie has several 'main' characters who all take their turn in the spotlight. The acting in this movie is phenomenal. Every character feels real and they all have a unique style. The movie begins with the wedding of the Don's daughter, a Sicilian tradition of which involves the father of the bride not being able to refuse any request on this day. Don Vito agrees to a few favors which drive the story for the next short while.

Don Vito (Marlon Brando) is the true highlight of the whole movie with Michael (Al Pacino at his finest) being the runner up in this department. The movie is full of now iconic phrases such as "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse." On top of the now legendary quotes this movie produced, several scenes are also incredible to see even today, such as the horse head in the bed scene.

The storyline can be a little hard to follow especially when people really start getting killed because the story setting bounces around all over the place and essentially has you following several different stories all at once. It can be difficult to understand who is still an ally, who is an enemy, and who is even a target towards the end of the film.

All things considered, a great film still today, but short of perfect in my opinion. The plot can be very hard to follow, but the film does a great job of making every single aspect of the film important to the overall story.

It's long and it's complicated, but it's definitely worth watching when you have the opportunity.

Grade: B+
