Evangelion:2.22 You Can (Not) Advance

Let me say in advance that I am sorry for those of you that don't care about this type of thing. This will be my last animated movie review for a while; but if you do care, hooray!

The plot of this is very much the same as its predecessor (obviously since they are part of a quadrilogy). New Eva pilots Asuka Langley Shikinami and Mari Illustrious Makinami are introduced in this movie and bring an even more diverse character set to the screen. Something interesting to notice is that Mari is designed to look British and Asuka is supposed to be born and raised in Germany but neither one seem to have any sort of accent. Another character, Kaworu Nagisa, is also shown a few times throughout the film sitting on an Eva on the moon and seems to be waiting for his chance to meet Shinji.

As the film begins, Mari is briefly shown piloting her Eva before detonating it to destroy an Angel, but manages to escape. Asuka is also introduced early having no trouble taking out an Angel that attacks Tokyo. Asuka moves into Misato's house to live with Shinji and her, but clashes personalities with both of them heavily.

Shinji spends most of the movie fighting with the reasons why he chooses to pilot Eva despite the pain it causes him. He also tries to bring Rei and Asuka closer to himself through much difficulty. The feel of the movie centers around tones of friendship, love, and independence.

Overall, this film is incredible. The characters really drag you in and make you feel for them when they are hurt, be it emotionally or physically. Gendo's role in the movie is excellent and really makes him seem like a true cloak and dagger villain. One point in the movie Gendo literally forces Shinji to make a life changing decision that scars him and sends him into a tailspin which was one of the more shocking and emotional moments I've witnessed in a movie in a long time.

If you are interested at all in this series and especially if you've already seen the first one, this movie is an absolute must see. One of the best films I've seen in a while.
