Ong-Bak

I'm really not big on martial arts movies, but after reading that Anderson Silva picked up and used a move that he saw in this movie in an actual cage fight (thanks for the tip, Rob) I had to check it out.

The plot is simple, something is stolen and one man is to get it back, of course.  The movie follows Ting as he goes to Bangkok to meet up with a former villager now turned douchebag Humlae and use his knowledge to retrieve the head of a deity known as Ong-Bak.  Humlae discovers that Ting has money and can fight, and uses him as a means to an end for his own financial troubles.

An interesting point is that the humor used in this movie actually carries over well, which is unusual in my limited experience with these types of movies.  The choreography of some of the fight scenes is a little lacking as you can see many of the combatants essentially ramming their faces/heads into the oncoming strike instead of making any attempt to react or dodge...or anything, but I suppose that's somewhat expected for this.

There are some serious elements of cheese in this movie too (at one point it literally shows fire in Ting's eyes, wack), but it doesn't take away from the experience at all. All of the fight scenes are fun to watch, as are the chases and the story in general is entertaining.

If you're into martial arts...hell even if you're not this movie is worth your time; it's fun, fast-paced, and the antagonist has a trach ring!  Now who doesn't love that?

Grade: B+
