The Basketball Diaries

Here's a movie that I was definitely late on seeing, and only really watched it because I saw it mentioned on Facebook somewhere recently and then it showed up on my on demand stations.  The story is basic, a kid's struggle with drug addiction, but the way it all plays out and the fact that it's based on a true story make it significantly more interesting.

For the most part, you could guess the plot of this movie to a T.  Kid has a future, kid throws future away for drugs, something in life intervenes, kid recovers.  It's interesting to see how they depict life in New York when the now more trendy areas were still pretty dangerous.  The crew that Leonardo DiCaprio (Jim in the movie) runs with is very relatable and I could see myself with a very similar group of friends in that area at that time.

What really makes this movie is Leo's performance.  He is so believable in his role that it seems like they actually made him do drugs to act so well.  If you're a Leo fan you have to see this movie.  Even at a young age it shows why he is one of the best actors to ever make it in Hollywood.

With the myriad of drug related movies that came out in the 90s and early 00s this one could be pretty easy to miss as it doesn't have the addict's perspective of reality that made some of the others so interesting.  Though I wouldn't put this movie in the same caliber as Trainspotting or Requiem for a Dream it is still definitely worth seeing.
