A Scanner Darkly

If you really want to watch this movie for what it is, please resist the temptation to get high before watching it even if the effects used make that seem like the greatest idea ever. A Scanner Darkly is a psychological drama starring Keanu Reeves, who fits in very well in this role, with great support from Winona Ryder and Robert Downey Jr.

The artistic animation used in the movie can make it difficult to watch. I left the movie with a bit of a headache which I assume was mostly from watching that animation the whole time and partly from trying to follow the landslide of twists at the end of the film. The acting is very good, and the cinematography can make you feel like you're the one taking the drugs in the movie.

The film follows Keanu Reeves's character Bob Arctor as he experiments with a drug called 'substance D' and also works as an undercover police officer using a 'scramble suit' which makes his real identity a mystery to the people looking at him. Without giving too much away, the movie is a mixture between viewing the world from the eyes of an addict and a cop movie trying to fight the source of substance D.

The only real flaw I see in the movie is that it has some minor pacing problems. It feels like the middle of the movie is sort of just dragging along even though the movie itself barely breaks the hour and a half mark. The beginning sets the tone very well, and the end of the movie is a total whirlwind that can be difficult to keep up with.

Overall, this is a very enjoyable movie and should be seen at least once totally sober in its entirety. If you can stay awake through the middle, you'll be rewarded at the end.

Grade: B+
