Stand by Me

So here's a movie I watched just because I saw it referenced on Facebook a few days ago.  It's a coming of age tale reminiscent of The Sandlot except much darker (R rated, in fact).

The story follows four peculiar youths from a small town which is apparently chock full of assholes.  One of the boys overhears that there is the body of a boy by the train tracks about 30 miles out of town and that the town is searching for the boy. Deciding if they find the body they can be on television and be heroes, the kids gather supplies, lie to their parents sufficiently, and head out.

The acting done by these children at the time is excellent, specifically Chris Chambers played by River Phoenix.  Plenty of memorable quotes and events came from this movie, and for good reason.  The main antagonist, Ace, could not have been cast any better, Kiefer Sutherland did a fantastic job turning this character into the scum of the Earth without going overboard.

The only downside I really found with this movie was how the emotional episodes a few of the characters go through simply didn't affect me.  I'm not especially emotional, but I do feel something from emotional points in movies (Mufasa dying? tragic), but for whatever reason the points in this movie just didn't hit home for me.

It's a fun, uplifting movie, definitely a movie to watch with the parents or with old friends especially if you haven't seen them in a while.

Cherry flavored Pez.
